“Learner Profile: Kenji”
Today, I learned a lot about my classmate Kenji. Before Kenji came to the United States, he had lived with his parents and an older brother in the ancient fashion city called Nan Jin in China. He is the youngest child in his family. Three years ago, he immigrated with his parents to New York. Kenji really loves New York’s environment because it has fresh air, good community service, and nice people. In his spare time, he likes to go swimming, which is his favorite activity. In addition, he is crazy about playing games through to midnight even though he knows his parents spoil him. However, he sometimes helps his family to do house work. He had already studied English for 12 years before he came here. Right now, he is studying English at CLIP in QCC. Sometimes he pushes himself to read English books, but he still has some problems understanding. So this semester, Kenji wants to build up his academic vocabularies and also he really wants to improve his reading skills because this is crucial for success in college. In the future, he wants to open his own business then become a sushi master chef and he wants to marry the girl who has a heart of gold then get five children. When he retires, he will travel around the world with his family.

According to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, the first part is about how a scientist, George Gey, made Henrietta Lacks’ cells live forever in the Lab. In addition, it also described the main character a young black mother, Henrietta Lacks’ whole difficult life when she died at thirty-one with cervical cancer. Her story is shocking and influences my heart deeply.
When Henrietta Lacks got health problem with cervical cancer, her family had to face many challenges. First of all, how to arranged children’s life, that was bother Lacks family a lot. The big child was a teenager; he always created trouble for his family. The second child Elsie was institutionalized dues to epilepsy. As the author described “sending Elsie away was the best thing [P. 45].” That was a doctor suggestion, so Henrietta’s family sent Elsie to the Crownsville State Hospital. This decision broke Henrietta Lacks’ heart and she was crying all the time. She also had to take care of other small children. In addition, how to scheduled to pick up Henrietta Lacks between Hospitals and home was a big challenge. After radiation treatment, she had to walk two and three blocks to her cousin’s house, and wait for her husband to come and then pick her back up. The radiation treatment also made Henrietta Lacks unable to get pregnant with another child. All of those challenges brought Henrietta Lacks family physical depression.
“ Hennie made life come alive- bein with her was like bein with fun [P.43].”As Henrietta’s cousin Sadie said, Henrietta Lacks always stayed positive and kind. After radiation treatments, she never told her family she was sick. She was very brave and strong. As Henrietta Lacks told her cousin “Nothing serious wrong with me, I am fine [P.46].” In addition, Henrietta Lacks had a bright personality. She loved beauty and amusement. For example, sometimes she put her favorite dark red color on her nails, and she sometimes went out to the dancing with her cousins. Even though Henrietta Lacks was extremely ill, she still spent much time cooking and took care her children and family. In addition, she never complained about her sickness and pain. She also didn’t want to cause her children and family to worry about her health. She was a lovely person.
The nice lady Henrietta Lacks was such a strong person to face various challenges. However, the cervical cancer ended her young life. Last eight months, Henrietta Lacks had to do many radiation and radium treatments in John Hopkins Hospital. She was very weak at the time. She often suffered relentless, nausea, vomiting, and anomia. As the author explained, “ each day the skin on her abdomen burned black and black and the pain grew worse [P. 65].” At the last month before Henrietta Lacks died, she left her house and began in the Hospital. She couldn’t see her children and husband. As the book described “ she cried and moaned for hours” and “ now tumor seemed to appear daily- on her lymph nodes, hip bones, labia- and she spent most days with a fever up to 105[P.65].” She was very sick in the hospital, and she did not have energy to see her family. Nevertheless, she would cross the room and go to window to watch her children and husband. She loved her family so much.
In conclusion, the lovely lady left us, but she was still living in our heart and our life. Amazingly, Henrietta’s cells are still helping the scientists for medical research.

Miss Evers Boys
From 1932 through1972, the United States federal government hid the fact to medical experiment research on African-Americans with syphilis in Alabama. The medical experiment was called the Tuskegee study. Doctors treated the African-Americans with placebos, and hid the real situation of their research. In addition, the Tuskegee study did not treated the African-Americans as normal people. The doctors refused to give them treatment and cured even though they all had disease. The main character Evers, mistaking because she involved in this medical experiment. She could not face to tell the true story directly to her friends, because she persuaded her friends to join this program in begin. Therefore, Evers argued with Dr. Sam Broadus, and she stole penicillin to help her friends, and she refused her happiness life with her boyfriend. As a result, she still got moral censure. However, she used her whole life to accompany her Boys.
I was so surprised when I watched this nonfiction movie Miss Evers Boys. I could not believe that such a powerful country as the United States still treated low class African-Americans cruel things, and they did involuntary medical experiment research with blacks after they had abolished slave seventy years. In addition, this movie was very heavy, dark, and it makes me feel so angry. I felt great sympathy for the main character Evers; she was missed decision and involved this medical experiment program as a nurse. She sacrificed her whole life to do the best to the Boys. At the end of the movie, she still got the Senate investigation’s lawsuit. That was not fair for Lady Evers. However, Why did not the federal government get condemnation?

GATTACA is a science fiction film written and directed by Andrew Niccol, that about eugenics. In the future, only a few people who have perfect genes can travel to space, and they also can get high-class jobs. If people do not have perfect genes, they are underclass and can only do menial jobs. The main character, Vincent Freeman, is really concentrated and favored on his dream of some day traveling to space. However, he does not have perfect genes because he was born naturally and is not special selection strains baby. Luckily, he gets an opportunity from Jerome Morrow who has perfect genes and can miraculous help Vincent to pass genetic testing. In the end, Vincent Freemen tries hard to defeat genetic discrimination to achieve his dream.
I cannot imagine how many difficult challenges Vincent Freemen has to face. He uses a strong brush to remove dead skin from his body, and he has to clip his nail tip everyday to pass testing. In addition, he endures a lot of stress to face genetic discrimination. Even though I really love this kind movie, I still disagree with scientists doing eugenics research. As far as I am concerned, people should stop scientific tests for eugenic experiment. First of all, human beings come in this world that is He’s kindness. We have already received bad things and good things. Even if special selection strains babies have perfect genes, who will guarantee after growing up they will never meet some problem? For instance, Vincent is naturally born but his brother is born by special selection strains. Of course, Vincent’s brother outside looks better than he. However, Vincent saves his brother’s life two times when they both swim competition in the ocean. Secondly, if scientists’ research only focuses on the eugenics, it will create an unsafe society. Some people will think that they are so smart then discriminate to the others because they have perfect genes. Some people think that they smart enough to invent something attack the world. In fact, the eugenics research will separate people on the different level that will fight in the result. In conclusion, all people want to get perfect genes and become an intelligent person. However, as the main character Vincent Freeman concentrates on his dream if we never give up. I believe that our dream become true in some day.

“The Friendship Bond”
In our life, we need to build up good friendship that will make our life interesting. In this passage “ The Friendship Bond,” author Parlee discuses that the two most important qualities of a good friendship are trust and acceptance. She supports this idea with several significant details. One important point that the author shows is that according to social psychologists trust is important, because it allows people to be honest. The author’s point is a good friendship should share their secrets with each other. This way, both friends can develop a deeper friendship. Ms. Parlee also states that most friendship end when one person feels betrayed by other person. I certainly agree with all of these points, especially the writer’s main idea! I believe that friends must have common interests in order to have a good relationship.
We are living in the complete community. We need to have good friendship. We also want to share our happiness and sadness. As the author describes that a survey from psychology explains the people want to accept them, to understand them, and to be honest with them. This survey is remind me, many years ago, when I decided to separate my first dating boyfriend, I relied on my friends who could give me energy and support me through the dark night. Because they understood what kind problem I had, I knew that I could be honest with them to talk about my personal problems. Certainly, this personal problem we always cannot share with our parents because they do not run on understand us.
In our social group, I learned that must people live in the busy community. They also need to build their friendship. However, people usually look for different way to match their interests friends group such as sports club, social club, and Internet club. So these group people are also based on as the author’s reports that to be honest understanding, and acceptances.
In conclusion, a good friendship makes our life interesting. We also have to share our happy and sad. Life never refuses good friends. Building up good friendship and opening your mind, you will lead to a wonderful life.

“Hang It Up”
When students are studying in school, they have to focus on studying. If they get habits distraction in class or cannot concentrate on studying, they will not graduate. The article “ Hang It Up,” is by author Jesse Scaccia, he is a public school teacher who has many teaching experiences. Jesse supports these points with several significant details. One important point is that a group of students using electronic cellphones that let students distraction in class. Another point is that when students use cellphones in classroom, they will impact other students cannot concentrate studying than fail exam as a result. The author tells us some parents insist their children to use cellphone cause by emergency. I certainly agree these point, especially the writer’s mean ideas! I believe that the students are studying in school. They main point is concentrated on studying and to get good education that they will have a better future.
The author’s experiences show us “ A student with a cellphone is an uninterested student, one with a short attention span who cares more about his or her social life than education,” I agree with that. For instance, in our classroom, students pay more attention on studying they always sit at front. However, students always like to sit behind other, they do not concentrated and they play the games or text massage with someone. They do not care about studying or passing the exam. As the author writers, students should focus to get education.
The development of technology gives us life many conveniences. We need to use cellphone when we have some emergency or we have free time to play games or we use cellphone to research academic vocabulary. However, if our students use cellphone in classroom that will have negative offends. As a teacher talks about reading skills that is you really want to study. But your friends’ text massages to you after school to play basketball then you text back to them. So that you lost good timing to listening teacher’s explaining.
Even though some parents think about cellphone as a connection to their children in an emergency, they still cannot control their children not using cellphone in classroom. If school has some emergency the school officer will call the parents. They have responsibility to take care about when students in school. Therefore, parents should tell their children not to use cellphone in classroom or not allow their children to bring cellphone to school. That will change their children distraction, and then will concentrate on studying in school.
In conclusion, students using cellphone is a very bad situation in class. If they cannot concentrate on studying, they will not get good education and gradate. Listening to the author’s suggestion, changing your mind and focusing in studying will allow you to have better life and good future.
